The importance of insect pollination is becoming of significant importance due to the dramatic losses of bees that have occurred in the past few years. Colony Collapse Disorder or Disappearing Bee Disease has resulted in huge hive losses in North America. Increasing urbanization resulting in disappearance of wild habitat is also an increasing factor. Large scale farming practises require correspondingly large numbers of bees to pollinate crops. Lack of proper pollination results in smaller and poor quality fruits.

The domesticated honeybee is the most significant commercial pollinator because it can be raised in high numbers to provide the huge number of bees required for pollination of large scale farms. If CCD and poor hive survival continue to be a problem, then problems in food supply will start to arise.
