A family that bet on the bees
Jerry and Pia Awram began beekeeping in Alberta in 1973, at a time when most keepers killed off their hives each fall and imported new bees every spring. Jerry believed sustainable beekeeping was the future — and set out to winter his bees alive.
In 1984, searching for milder winters, the family moved the entire operation to British Columbia's Fraser Valley, becoming one of the first to pioneer over-wintering techniques. Today all three of Jerry and Pia's sons — Peter, Tom, and David — run the business as a true family enterprise.
